Glasgow's Own Mardi Gras

As preparations continue for the West End Festival 2009, it has been announced that the annual ‘Scotland’s Mardi Gras’ street party and parade will be relocating from Byres Road to Kelvin Way and Kelvingrove Park - creating a new event, ‘Festival Sunday’.

Kelvin Way will be closed off and will host the parade on Sunday 14th June, alongside lots of other events which will take place in Kelvingrove Park including stalls, food and drinks. The festival will launch on Friday 12th June and will run until Sunday 28th June.

Liz Scobie, Chairman for the West End Festival Board said: ‘A new initiative for this year – ‘Festival Sunday’ is planned for Kelvin Way and Kelvingrove Park. This introduces a fresh element to the 2009 Festival and one which we are all very much looking forward to.’

Celebrating its 14th year in 2009, the West End Festival brings families, friends and children together to celebrate the community spirit and cultural diversity of Glasgow’s West End, with over two hundred events crammed into two weeks of carnival entertainment. The festival is expected to attract over 200,000 revellers to take part in the activities on offer ranging from theatre, comedy, live concerts, fairs, walks and talks.
As well as the opening Festival Sunday, there will be festival favourites such as Bard in the Botanics, Gibson Street Gala, and the Fête de la Musique on Ashton Lane. The 2009 Glasgow International Jazz festival also takes place from Friday 19th June to Tuesday 30th June with a fantastic programme of concerts and events in venues across the city.

So Glasgow will be musically ‘buzzin’ with plenty to keep you entertained!
