The Chinese Employment Project attended the Chinese Healthy
Living Centre’s AGM on 10 June in Maryhill Community Hall.
During the meeting, Lily Lee, a CEP client, delivered a touching
speech based on her personal experience, which truly reflected
the barriers and difficulties faced by the Chinese community
in terms of employment.
Ms Lee had a few unsuccessful job applications in the
past due to lack of mainstream support, lack of knowledge about
mainstream employability services and poor English ability. She
lost her confidence and found out it really hard to integrate
into mainstream employment.
With the help of the Chinese Employment Project she got a job
working as a home carer for Glasgow City Council. She said, “I
really appreciated the help and support of the Chinese Employment
Project. It did not only help me finding a job, more importantly
it helped me regain my confidence. I just completed my training,
from which I learnt quite a lot. Nowadays I take an English class
in the afternoon whilst I work in the morning. Also I started
driving lessons, as this job requires me to drive. I was feeling
very down and staying at home all day doing nothing before. But
now, I feel I am full of energy and a lot of work is waiting
for me to achieve. I hope this project will continue to support
more people like me”.
