Record numbers of visitors attended the Glasgow River
Festival this year with over 87,000 people enjoying a vast array
of entertainment and activities on land and on water. Highlights
of the fifth annual festival included a thrilling display of
jet ski racing and Glasgow’s first ever beach volleyball
tournament.
This year’s festival, which was held in and around the Tall Ship at Glasgow
Harbour, the SECC and Glasgow Science Centre, featured a number of new additions
to its on water programme including a crowd-pleasing jet ski acrobatics performance,
which was held in addition to the racing. Favourites from previous years also
returned including the high speed Zapcat taster sessions and tours of Glasgow’s
iconic Tall Ship the Glenlee.
On land spectators were thrilled to see world class volleyball players display
their skills in the Urban Beach Elite tournament on a beach which has been specially
created for the Glasgow River Festival. Youngsters also took the opportunity
to get involved in the ‘Beach Kids’ programme, receiving free expert
tuition from some of the UK’s top coaches on playing the game.
Scott Taylor, Chief Executive, Glasgow City Marketing Bureau said:

and the festival’s popularity clearly demonstrates the river’s significance
to the city’s past and future.”
