The Glasgow News is celebrating its second birthday this
month!
Here, we take a look back at some of the stories we’ve featured
in previous issues.
AUGUST 2006

This was the first issue of the paper, published as the
Glasgow West News. It was distributed to 30 000 homes within the
west of the city. This issue included details of the new Whiteinch
community centre, the re-opening of the refurbished Kelvingrove
Art Gallery & Museum and the Clyde waterfront development.
DECEMBER 2006

By October 2006, the re-titled Glasgow News was being
distributed to 70000 homes in the west and centre of the city.
The December issue included an interview with the Glasgow Girls,
a group of young women who highlighted the plight of asylum seekers
in Glasgow. We also featured the Show Racism The Red Card football
camp for children and included some lovely drawings from children
within the Knightswood Learning Community to raise awareness of
good oral health.
APRIL 2007

This issue gave details of the £200 million regeneration
project in the west, with the proposed construction of 1200 homes
within Drumchapel. We highlighted the home fire safety visits which
Strathclyde Fire & Rescue can provide and the work of the local
Community Planning Partnerships. The Spotlight On ... report this
month featured Drumchapel.
AUGUST 2007

One year on, and our front page celebrated the first birthday
of the reopened Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum. Our centre
spread feature the work of Glasgow West Regeneration Agency (formerly
Drumchapel Opportunities) and we also covered the launch of the
Fire Cadet Programme.
OCTOBER 2007

The Clean Glasgow campaign featured in this issue as two
milestones were reached in terms of participant numbers. The services
provided by the Community Health & Care Partnership in the
west were highlighted and we included some photos of a very wet,
but well attended D5k.
DECEMBER 2007

With the rest of the city, we celebrated the Commonwealth
Games achievement in this issue. Our centre spread showed the restructuring
of police divisions in the city, and we included an interview with
retiring Drumchapel Head Teacher Wilson Blakey.
FEBRUARY 2008

This issue included the tale of 2 bridges – the
final planned completion of the bridge to nowhere and the squinty
bridge being closed for repairs. Our Youth Zone was also written
by the Glasgow News Youth team.
