A Glasgow school’s multi-national basketball team
has proven to be unbeatable for the second year in a row.
The Hillhead High School Under 15 boy’s team has just
completed yet another outstanding season, in which it:
• Won the Scottish Cup, which it retained from last year
• Won the Glasgow League title, which it retained from
last year
• Won the Glasgow Cup
The all-conquering team consists of a squad of 11 players - all
in 3rd year - from an amazing nine different countries.
The boys come from the Congo (2), Libya (2), the Caribbean, Iran,
Cameroon, Pakistan, Malawi, India and Afghanistan.
The team is coached by John Campbell who, until he retired a
few years ago, also taught English at Hillhead High.
The Scottish Cup is open to all secondary schools in the country,
both state and private. This year about 45 entered, and Hillhead
beat Largs Academy in the final.
The Glasgow League and Cup is also open to schools from both
sectors. Hillhead played 14 games in the league and won them
all.
Bailie Gordon Matheson, Executive Member for Education and Social
Renewal, said: “To remain unbeaten against teams from all
over Scotland, never mind just Glasgow, for two years in a row
is a fantastic achievement.
“These boys are a credit to their school and to the city,
and they should be very proud of what they’ve accomplished.
I warmly congratulate both the team and the coaching staff at
Hillhead High, and look forward to hearing of further successes
in the future.”
