City Centre Now Has Shopmobility
Getting around Glasgow City centre has just become easier. Shopmobility is a new service, supported by Glasgow’s Local Regeneration Agencies, the City Council and other key partner agencies, to assist people with mobility issues or other impairments to be able to shop and visit leisure, tourist and commercial facilities within the city centre.
The service offers a range of mobility equipment - electric scooters, powered and manual wheelchairs and Shopmobility staff are also fully trained to provide a flexible and wide ranging service. In addition, a ‘meet and greet’ service is available where staff bring equipment to customers at their arrival point in the city centre such as Central Station and Buchanan Bus Station.
With offices in Buchanan Galleries and St Enoch Centre, the service is ideally located within the ‘the Style Mile’- from Sauchiehall Street, down through the pedestrianised areas of Buchanan Street and leading onto Argyle Street.
“Over 400 people have used the service so far” Catriona Hunter, Glasgow Shopmobility Manager told us. She added, ‘We want our customers’ visit to Glasgow city centre to be a really enjoyable experience and in providing our new service we can make this possible’
Calum Graham, Chief Executive of Glasgow West Regeneration Agency is on the board of Glasgow Shopmobility. He said “This is a valuable service that helps improve the quality of life for people with mobility issues and visual impairments. Furthermore by making Glasgow more accessible, the new project will also bring economic benefits to local businesses”.
Glasgow Shopmobility also provides opportunities for people of all ages to become involved as volunteers. As well as bringing life experience and skills, the project gives individuals a renewed confidence. The project is currently recruiting volunteers to help out in the office and/or assist Shopmobility users on shopping trips. Training is given and expenses are paid.
