CPP Update : Introduction and Update from Councillor Carey and Bailie Matheson/CPP Chairs

As we bask in the summer sunshine – okay, poetic licence I know to describe the weather in Glasgow – but we have been fortunate to enjoy a glimpse of the sun this year.
In this edition of the Glasgow News you are able to read about some of the investment that has been made over the last year by community planning partners in your local open spaces and on your doorstep to enjoy during the remainder of the summer. I am delighted to say that almost £600,000 has been spent across the west of the city, improving play parks and open spaces in numerous areas. From Drumchapel and Yoker to Whiteinch, Woodlands and Hillhead, locals now have no excuse not to get out in the fresh air, increase energy and fitness levels, and children and young people can access high quality equipment and facilities.
Check-out the centre pages for more detailed information on what has been done and is now on offer in your area.
There is also information on your local CPP team, contact numbers and details on how they are working with the community to improve facilities and services

Campus Officers

The beginning of the new school term at Drumchapel High and Knightswood Secondary schools will not only see an influx of new starts in S1 but two new campus officers as well.
The campus police and campus fire officers will provide a valuable resource and support role to the youngsters and staff at the school and feeder primary schools in their area.
This model has been highly successful in other parts of the city, although the campus fire officer will be the first appointment to the city.
As we go to press, PC Mark Barrow has been appointed as the campus police officer and will be taking up his position at the beginning of the new school term. Interviews are still to be held for the fire officer and a bigger feature on both posts will be in a future issue of the Glasgow News.
West Community Planning Partnership is delighted to jointly fund this programme along with Strathclyde Police and Strathclyde Fire & Rescue.
Both officers will play an active role in all schools and community groups in our area and is a really positive and valuable development for our communities.

The West Arts Network

Arts and cultural activities in the west have also received a boost recently to the tune of £20,000 from Fairer Scotland Funding.
West Arts Network, led by Glasgow Life (the new name for Culture & Sport Glasgow) had been awarded the grant to create a programme that gave art groups the chance to work in partnership, reach new audiences and encourage more people to become involved in new art forms.
This initiative has proved a great success with over 500 people, of all ages and abilities, over the last few months trying their hand at theatre, dance, music and craft activities.
Where the good news is that the organisers are so delighted with the response that they have bigger and better things planned in the near future and a grant of £64,000 awarded from community planning this year will help enormously. See our front cover story for more.
