Blairdardie and Old Drumchapel Community Council organized a walkabout last month, but this had nothing to do with Australia. The lead up to the summer has seen an increase in disorder and gang fighting in the Blairdardie area around Moraine Avenue and the canal towpath.
Councillor Anne McTaggart who recently visited the hotspot area met with representatives from Strathclyde Police, Glasgow Community & Safety Services (GCSS), Glasgow City Council Land and Environmental Services (LES), British Waterways and the Community Council.
A number of strategies were already in action, including deployable CCTV cameras and increased patrols on foot and mountain bikes. Overgrown foliage where alcohol and weapons are hidden was identified as a problem and will be tackled jointly by LES and a GCSS Community Reparations Team who hope to have the site cleared shortly. The area is already reported to be quieter but all agencies involved will continue their efforts throughout the summer.
