Glasgow’s Concert Halls

This August, the Halls will play host to some of the world’s finest piping talent as Piping Live! returns to Glasgow. Highlights of the 2010 festival include Capercaillie in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, and the After Worlds Shindig at the Old Fruitmarket featuring Treacherous Orchestra, Breabach and Fred Morrison.

Elsewhere in the August programme, the NYOS Summer Concert returns to the Concert Hall, and folk music icon Arlo Gurthrie appears in the Old Fruitmarket.

NYOS Summer Concert
Mon 9 August, 7:30pm : Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, Main Auditorium
This summer, NYOS will welcome back old friends with Diego Masson returning to conduct Mahler’s Fifth Symphony and Webern’s Six Pieces for Orchestra. We also welcome the return of the wonderful Jane Irwin who will be singing the Three Fragments from “Wozzeck” by Berg.

Piping Live! 2010 - Opening Night Concert

Piping Live! 2010 opens with a bang as stalwarts of the Celtic music scene The Battlefield Band take to the stage. Inspired by their rich heritage of Celtic music and fired by the strength of the modern Scottish cultural scene, The Battlefield Band mixes the old songs and tunes with new self-penned material, playing them on a unique fusion of ancient and modern instruments: bagpipes, synthesizers, fiddles, guitars, cittern, bass, whistles, and bouzouki.

The Acoustic Affair presents Arlo Guthrie

Folk music icon, Arlo Guthrie is a legendary artist who shares timeless stories and unforgettable classic songs as he carries on the Guthrie family legacy. The Body & Soul Fairs are ideal for those interested in sampling the worlds of natural health and spirituality. The special guest speaker at this fair will be Barbara Meiklejohn-Free, the author of The Heart of all Knowing. Barbara will give a free talk on Shamanic Healing on Saturday 21 August at 2pm, and will hold a workshop in Shamanic Crystal Healing on Sunday 22 August between 1-3pm (tickets for the workshop are £9). Open Mic UK
the national music talent competition searching for singers and solo artists in the UK, returns to Glasgow this August. Acts can perform either covers or original material throughout the competition. Open Mic UK offers entrants not only the chance to win prizes, but the opportunity to perform live in some of the best music venues in the country and the Grand Final is set to take place in the O2 in London!
There will be £50,000 worth of prizes up for grabs and the winning act will not only be crowned the Best On The Mic in front of a packed out crowd at the O2 in London, they will also be offered a recording contract to release their single.
