Money Week

Schools and nurseries in Drumchapel have been hosting a series of Money Week events in an effort to make pupils more financially aware.

Drumchapel LIFE’s latest programme, ‘Life Moves’ has been working with Learning Teaching Scotland (LTS) to include over 1000 children to take a week out of the school year and focus on the importance of money management. LTS have also trained nearly 120 staff from nurseries and schools in financial awareness.

Kenny Macdonald, Manager of Drumchapel LIFE said: ‘This programme of work with schools has been really successful at giving children the confidence and skills. We already know that many of the children have been passing on their new found knowledge to parents and others in the local community.”

Pupils took part in a number of activities including designing banks and bank notes, making radio plays about money, running their own café and participating in workshops with Glasgow Credit Union, the Children’s Rights Project and Greater Easterhouse Money Advice Project.

Bill Butler, MSP for Glasgow Anniesland attended Langfaulds Primary’s open afternoon and commented that, “good financial planning is an essential life skill and one that we all have to learn. It is my hope that, thanks to projects such as ‘Money Week’, the pupils of Drumchapel will be able to deal with financial challenges in the future.”

Drumchapel LIFE is already in talks with other establishments within the West Community Planning Partnership area about hosting another series of Money Week events during the coming academic year.
