Brave United fall at last
Drumchapel U14s battled their way to the Scottish Cup final against Hearts-supported Tyncastle Boys Club on Sunday 2nd May.
Having beaten competition far and wide from all over Scotland, the Under 14 Drumchapel United team completed their journey against reigning champions (of the U13 Scottish Cup) at the Excelsior Stadium in Airdrie. Against some players that towered above them, Drumchapel were firm underdogs going into the contest but in the ninth minute Harry Clark lobbed the Tynecastle keeper to put the Glasgow boys ahead.
After piling on the pressure, Tynecastle eventually equalized with a shot to the right corner by Connor Brydon leveling the score at 1-1. Just before half time, Clark was brought down near the touchline and a free kick was awarded. As the ball was looped in, amidst the packed box, one of the Tynecastle boys sliced in an own goal to give Drumchapel the lead.
The lead did not last long, though, as two minutes after the restart a corner kick saw Gregor Lockhart equalize once again for Tynecastle, leading to a grueling second half of tight defence and little in the way of chances for both sides. It would not be until the dying embers of the game when the winner was certain, with Cameron Young putting the Edinburgh team ahead for the first time in the game, making Tynecastle the 2010 U14 Scottish Cup Champions.
A cruel blow to the Drumchapel United boys who can be proud of their efforts and reflect on an amazing journey to the final.
Manager David Seawright said “the boys fought hard and didn’t look out of place against a well organised and funded Tynecastle team. They will take strength from this and I believe that if we continue to improve as we are then silverware is just around the corner. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all those who travelled to Airdire in support and also Glasgow West Regeneration Agency for ensuring the boys looked the part by providing new strips for the final”.
